Abstract

This text describes the experience and results of an interprofessional intervention developed at the Interprofessional Stimulation Laboratory in Selective Eating (LEISA), located at the Specialized Rehabilitation Center (CER III) in Caicó/RN, focused on the care of neurodivergent children. The intervention was carried out by a team composed of professionals from the areas of Speech Therapy, Psychology, Psychopedagogy, and Nutrition, from 2021 to 2025. Weekly sessions, in therapeutic groups divided by age range (3 to 6 years and 7 to 10 years), aimed at developing oral functions related to feeding, such as chewing and swallowing, as well as providing opportunities for sensory exploration and promoting functional and enjoyable eating with autonomy and independence. Strategies supported by evidence-based practices, playful methodologies, and parental education principles were adopted, considering neurodiversity and the individualization of care. The workshops included activities focused on stomatognathic functions, gradual progression of food consistencies, visual and olfactory exposure, and social skills, in a safe and welcoming environment facilitated by professionals, in addition to support for families. The results indicate advances in tolerance, interaction, and acceptance of new foods, as well as improvements in family life, functional skills, and the autonomy of the children. The experience demonstrates the positive impact of interprofessional approaches in the nutritional rehabilitation of autistic children, highlighting the importance of affection, sensitive listening, and family co-responsibility in the therapeutic process. The experience thus proves to be a replicable and relevant strategy for the health of people with disabilities, nutritional education, and the inclusion of children with ASD.
