Abstract

Based on a brief literature review, this article aims to advance the debate surrounding the notion of a totalitarian neoliberal project. It uses as its foundational text the book The New Reason of the World: An Essay on Neoliberal Society, by Pierre Dardot and Christian Laval – published in Brazil in 2016 – which presents a critical reading of the emergence of neoliberalism, highlighting the elements of rupture with classical liberalism, especially from the reformulation of the idea of interventionism. For the authors, instead of simply advocating for a minimal state, as in the liberal model, neoliberalism is configured precisely as a normative and governmental rationality that aims to intervene in the state in order to exclusively promote the best conditions for the functioning of the market. Thus, neoliberalism aims at the capture of the state by private interests, to the point of constituting a kind of market-state or corporate state. Thus, in order to consider the existence and operation of a totalitarian neoliberal project, it is necessary to first approach the categories of neoliberalism, dispositif and subjectivation in parallel with the new faces of totalitarian power in the contemporary world, at least, this is what we seek to present in the following pages with the contribution of authors such as: Agamben (2009), Brown (2019) and Foucault (2008).
