Abstract

The study aims to investigate the sources of the administrative inquiries initiated by the Department of Education of Bahia between 1935 and 1938. These were mechanisms of disciplinary and moral control over primary school teachers. The research, qualitative in nature and situated within the field of History of Education, uses social history as a framework and analyzes documents from the Public Archive of the State of Bahia. The theoretical foundation is based on the studies of Foucault (1994), Damasceno and Pantoja (2020), and Souza (2008). The sources reveal practices of surveillance and punishment associated with norms of civic duty and teacher morality. It concludes that the inquiries functioned as instruments of power, aimed at standardizing conservative conduct and shaping an ideal of the teacher.
