Geological and geomorphological characterization of the municipality of Tejuçuoca, Ceará

Abstract

The municipality of Tejuçuoca is located in the northern region of the territory of Ceará, situated on the backlands surface, surrounded by relief forms which stand out in the Serras da Catirina, da Caboretinga, da Barra and da Vertente, which together represent the largest local altimetric relief features. Despite the morphological diversity, the region is known and studied predominantly for its karst features; the other aforementioned reliefs are little explored by the scientific and touristic community. In this context, the objective of this research is to carry out a geological and geomorphological characterization in the municipality of Tejuçuoca, Ceará. The methodology used is of a qualitative nature with a descriptive character; the stages undertaken were bibliographic review, data collection and selection, fieldwork and cartographic production. The landforms are characterized by the predominance of flattened surfaces and fluvial plains.

Author Biographies

João Luís Sampaio Olímpio, Federal Institute of Education, Science and Technology of Ceará (IFCE)

Holds Bachelor’s, Master’s, and Doctoral degrees in Geography from the Federal University of Ceará (UFC), with a focus on Environmental and Territorial Dynamics. Holds specializations in Environmental Planning and Management (State University of Ceará - UECE), Teaching in Professional and Technological Education (Federal Institute of Ceará - IFCE), and Environmental Education and Sustainability (Federal University of Pará - UFPA). Worked as an environmental analyst in the private sector (2012–2017). Currently, he is a faculty member at the Federal Institute of Education, Science and Technology of Ceará (IFCE). He is a recipient of the Research Productivity, Regionalization, and Technological Innovation grant from the Ceará Foundation for Scientific and Technological Development Support (FUNCAP) for the 2025–2027 period. He served as coordinator of the Technical Course in Environment at IFCE, Quixadá campus (2019–2021). He leads the research group "Integrated Studies in Environmental Geography, Geodiversity, and Geoinformation" (NIGEO). His experience covers the following topics: natural risks and disasters, environmental degradation, social vulnerability, hydrometeorological impacts, geodiversity, desertification, and geographic information systems (GIS).

JOSÉ Falcão Sobrinho, Vale do Acaraú State University - UVA

CNPq Productivity Researcher (Level C). Coordinator of the Graduate Program in Geography at Vale do Acaraú State University (UVA) and permanent faculty member of PRODEMA (Doctoral Program in Development and Environment) at the Federal University of Ceará (UFC). Holds a post-doctorate in Geography from UFC, a PhD in Physical Geography from the University of São Paulo (USP, 2006), and a Master’s degree in Geography from the Federal University of Uberlândia (UFU, 2001). Leader of the Semi-Arid Research and Extension Network (RPES/CNPq). Member of the North and Northeast Geography Researchers Network (RENNEGEO) and the "Nós Propomos" (We Propose) Network. Associate of the Brazilian Geomorphology Union (UGB). Coordinator of projects supported by PRODETAB, CNPq, CAPES, and FUNCAP. Participates in collaborative agreements with the Universities of Lisbon and Évora. Served as Pro-Rector of Extension at UVA (2009–2012) and Director of CCH/UVA (2007–2009). Member of the Advisory Boards of FUNCAP and CNPq. His research focuses primarily on the semi-arid environment, emphasizing landform mapping and erosive processes. He conducts research on technologies for living with the semi-arid environment and on Contextualized Education for the Semi-Arid Environment. In teaching, he emphasizes the theoretical foundations of Physical Geography and natural approaches to teaching the subject. Regarding extension activities, he carries out initiatives in public schools, coordinating projects such as Science Fairs and the National Science and Technology Week. He develops projects focused on social technologies within communities. He is the editor of *William Morris Davis – Revista de Geomorfologia* and the *International Journal Semiarid*, as well as Editor-in-Chief of the *Geografia do Semiárido* (Geography of the Semi-Arid) series.
