Accuracy Assessment of Unmanned Aircraft Systems for Volumetric Estimation in Quarries

Abstract

This study proposes a methodology using drone-based surveys for volume calculations, applied to scenarios such as tailings stacking, landfills, road cuts, and other material disposal methods commonly used in engineering. It also compares this approach to a traditional method based on conventional topographic surveys. Drones have been increasingly adopted for volume calculations, offering potential benefits such as operational efficiency and reduced risks during data collection.  

A case study was conducted at the Anápolis Quarry, employing two distinct survey methods: conventional topography and drone-based photogrammetry. Metrics such as precision, error rates, and computational resources were evaluated, with Ground Control Points (GCPs) playing a key role in ensuring accuracy. The surfaces were modeled using QGIS and Surfer software, and the results were compared to assess the methodologies. This study provides insights into the applicability of drone technology for volumetric analyses in engineering contexts
