THE URGENCY OF THE ANTHROPOCENE

Abstract

The dominant external forces controlling Earth’s dynamics have been astronomical and geophysical forces during the planet’s 4.5-billion-year existence. In the last six decades, anthropic forces have driven exceptionally rapid rates of change on Earth. An ‘Anthropocene Equation’, where the natural forces tend to zero and the anthropic forces becomes comparable to them or even superior, represented this new regime. One of the consequences of the antropogenic changes is global warming. The geographers have decided, until now, not be part of this discussion. Nevertheless, the gravity of the situation demands another attitude from geographers, to help avoids an environmental and societal global catastrophe. This paper presents reflections about these situations, having as methodology the analysis of material that discusses the theme.

Vanda de Claudino-Sales, Universidade Estadual Vale do Acaraú - UVA

Possui graduação em Bacharelado Em Geografia pela Universidade de Brasília (1981), especializacao em Geologia Costeira pela Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Sul (UFRGS), mestrado em Geografia (Geografia Física) pela Universidade de São Paulo (1993), doutorado em Geografia Ambiental na Université Paris-Sorbonne (2002) e pos-doutorado em Geomorfologia Costeira na Universidade da Florida (2006). Professora aposentada do Departamento de Geografia da Universidade Federal do Ceara (UFC) , foi professora visitante na Universidade da Florida, na Universidade Paris-Sorbonne e no Mestrado em Geografia da Universidade Estadual Vale do Acarau (UVA). Integrou a Comissao de Avaliacao da Pos-Graduacao em Geografia CAPES (2006-2010). Eh vice-presidente regional da fundacao americana de pesquisa costeira CERF (Coastal Education and Research Foundation) e pesquisadora desenvolvimento Regional Nivel A do CNPq junto a Universidade Estadual Vale do Acarau, Ceara. Eh Editora-chefe da William Morris Davis - Revista de Geomorfologia. Tem experiencia em Geomorfologia Estrutural, Megageomorfologia, Geomorfologia Costeira e Analise Ambiental. Eh ambientalista, estando em movimentacao pela preservacao do meio ambiente no Estado do Ceara por mais de 40 anos.
