THE RISKS RELATED TO KARST IN NORTHEAST BRAZIL

Abstract

The present manuscript constitutes a theoretical approach on the risks related to the karst environment in Northeastern Brazil, discussed in the context of a round table on the occasion of the 1st Symposium on Risk and Disaster Reduction, which took place between the 5th and 8th of November 2019, promoted by research group on risk and disaster management (GENAT), from the Federal University of Rio Grande do Norte. The objective was to address the risks related to karst areas in Northeast Brazil. The exploration of groundwater and pollution of karst aquifers were addressed as the main risk factors in these environments in the context of the Northeast of Brazil, in addition to elements related to inappropriate occupation, as occurs in other environments. The theoretical basis for this discussion came from the analysis of research that addresses this theme in the aforementioned Brazilian geographical region.

Caio Lima dos Santos, Secretaria de Educação do Estado da Paraíba

Possui graduação em Geografia pela Universidade Federal da Paraíba (2013), mestrado em Geografia pela Universidade Federal de Pernambuco (2016) e doutorado em Geografia pela Universidade Federal de Pernambuco (2020). Atualmente é professor substituto da Universidade Estadual da Paraíba e professor da rede estadual de ensino do Estado da Paraíba. Tem experiência na área de geografia, com ênfase em geomorfologia, atuando principalmente nos seguintes temas: geomorfologia cárstica, risco, erosão, estudos de bacias hidrográficas e ensino de geografia.

Graduado em Geografia pela Universidade Federal da Paraíba (UFPB), Mestre em Geografia e Doutor em Geociências pela Universidade Federal de Pernambuco (UFPE). É Professor Adjunto II da Universidade Federal da Paraíba (UFPB), lotado no Departamento de Geociências do Centro de Ciências Exatas e da Natureza (DGEOC/CCEN). Atua como Professor e Pesquisador Permanente dos Programas de Pós-Graduação em Geografia da UFPB (PPGG) e da UFRN (GEOCERES), Líder do Grupo de Pesquisa em Geomorfologia e Gestão dos Riscos Naturais (GENAT), Coordenador do Laboratório de Geomorfologia e Gestão dos Riscos (LAGERISCO) e Coordenador do Núcleo de Estudos e Ações em Urgências e Desastres (NEUD) - Biênio (2021-2023). Também é Secretário Geral da Associação dos Geógrafos Brasileiros (AGB), Seção Local Caicó - RN. Desenvolve pesquisas na área de Geociências, com ênfase em Geomorfologia e Geotecnologias, com interesse nas seguintes temáticas: vulnerabilidades e riscos naturais, morfodinâmica de áreas semiáridas, geomorfologia cárstica, cartografia geomorfológica e cartografia escolar.
