The objective of this article is to analyze the official propaganda produced by the federal agencies responsible for irrigation policies in the Brazilian Northeast during the civil-military dictatorship (1964-1985). The 1960s and, especially, the 1970s were marked by a series of interventions that transformed the image of the Northeastern backlands. Among these initiatives, the Irrigated Perimeters stand out, areas delimited by the State for the implementation of irrigation projects in the humid valleys, aiming at increasing local production. This study analyzes the spatial representation promoted by the official propaganda, taking as an example the magazines Sudene Informa and Interior, in which the humid valleys are presented as “promised lands”.
