Abstract: The beginning of the 19th century in the captaincy/province of Rio Grande do Norte was marked by profound political unrest. Two events with a very short degree of proximity marked the political history of Rio Grande do Norte. In 1817, the captaincy, until then, experienced an experience with a republican government installed after the Insurrection of 1817. Still in 1821, the system of Provisional Government Boards was implemented. With the pardon granted to all those involved with the 1817 Insurrection, those arrested in Bahia returned to their provinces and were able to participate in the elections for Provisional Government Boards and, with this, new disputes between local elites came to the surface. This work seeks to analyze the conflicts between local elites in the Provisional Government Boards between 1821 and 1822.
