o processo de cristianização da Freguesia de São João Batista do Assú – séc. XVIII-XIX

The first parish to be created in the backlands of the Captaincy of Rio Grande (do Norte) was the Parish of São João Batista do Assú, in 1725. Since then, this parish has been entrusted with the care of a vast Christian territory extending across both banks of the Açu River. Therefore, this study is aimed at understanding the process of Christianization of the Parish of São João Batista do Assú, using its chapels — which were erected from the 18th century into the 19th century — as focal points. The corpus of sources used in this research includes documents from the Arquivo Histórico Ultramarino, land grant letters, reports on visits conducted by the bishops of Pernambuco, along with the historiographical production on the hinterlands of Assú. As a result, it was possible to point out some considerations that trace the dispersion and slowness regarding the Christianization in the Parish of São João Batista do Assú.
