Abstract

During the occupation of the captaincies of Piauí and Maranhão, the alliances established with the indigenous peoples were fundamental in maintaining the colonial territories. For the indigenous peoples, getting closer to the Portuguese, besides being a matter of survival, was also a strategy, as the latter knew how to take advantage of these alliances to favor their own interests. Thus, through the analysis of several documents from the Overseas Historical Archive, we seek to discuss the indigenous protagonism in the formation of these alliances and to understand what strategies were used to garner their interests and which subjects were involved in these relationships. Our aim is to demonstrate how the indigenous peoples were involved in the political game, consciously recreating possibilities of autonomy.
