Abstract

The article analyzes artistic practices in the creation of generative video art, highlighting two models: the use of artificial intelligence (AI) to generate images through textual description and the creation of videos with vector-based systems like OpenGL. By differentiating these models, it defines the computer as a central tool capable of managing crucial stages of the creative process. Exploring concepts of generative art, creative processes, and computational art, the text reflects on the technical and ethical aspects of the relationship between artist and machine. It also considers the computer as an "oracle," offering practical and aesthetic solutions throughout the creative process. The article further proposes an analysis of the field of generative video art as a subjective aesthetic discourse, rooted in the sublime, that challenges traditional audiovisual grammar, establishing itself as a contemporary artistic practice.

Author Biographies

Alexandre G. Q. Rangel, Universidade de Brasília (UnB)

Alexandre Rangel (1974) is a Brazilian new media artist working with video art and audiovisual software development. His works have facets that explore the relations between the main themes of his imagetic poetry: human kind, religiosity and urban society. He portrays the relations with technology as motifs of higher rationale and agnostic wonder. His main tools are the camera and custom made audiovisual software. Rangel developed the open source VJ software Quase-Cinema, a live video editing environment for improvised audiovisual creation, experimentation and art education platform. Marcelo Gomes, Independent researcher

Marcelo Gomes, known artistically as Mathias Lobo, is an independent artist and researcher. He holds a Master’s degree in Film and Video Arts from the Graduate Program at the State University of Paraná, Unespar, and is a member of the CineCriare Research Group (Cinema: Criação e Reflexão), affiliated with PPG-CINEAV/Unespar, and CNPq (National Council for Scientific and Technological Development). He also holds a specialization in Cinema and the Audiovisual Market. His research and creative practice focus on generative video art and artificial intelligence, exploring these fields through his own compositions. In addition to being a musician and composer, he works as a producer, photographer, and editor across various audiovisual formats.
