Call for Thematic Dossier

Artistic Research and Creative Processes: Writing Practices and New Forms of Dissemination

Introduction
The journal *ARJ – Art Research Journal*—a joint publication by ABRACE (Performing Arts), ANPPOM (Music), ANPAP (Visual Arts), and ANDA (Dance), in partnership with the Federal University of Rio Grande do Norte (UFRN)—hereby announces a call for the thematic dossier "Artistic Research and Creative Processes: Writing Practices and New Forms of Dissemination." This call invites submissions of audio and video essays aimed at disseminating work and fostering reflection within the field of Artistic Research.

This call is open to artist-researchers from all artistic disciplines represented by the associations that comprise the journal; it is not restricted to any specific artistic medium or field.

About the Audio Essay or Video Essay

Submissions of audio essays or video essays will be accepted if they focus on:
● demonstrating and reflecting upon an artistic creation process or performance;
● an analytical process regarding the creation process or performance itself;
● presenting an artistic work or performance accompanied by critical reflection, explanation, or a demonstration of the process that gave rise to it.

The aim is to value the audio essay and video essay as legitimate forms of communication and documentation for Artistic Research—going beyond traditional academic text—thereby allowing processes related to Artistic Research to be presented through diverse modes of expression.

Technical and Formal Requirements

● Maximum duration of 20 (twenty) minutes.
● The video must be accompanied by a written document (in Word or a similar format) describing the experience of the creative or analytical process presented (see the “Accompanying text” section below).
● Accepted formats: MP3, WAV, MP4, AVI, or other standard audio or video formats, with quality suitable for viewing and streaming.
● Setting and filming environment: For video essays, the video must be produced in a setting or location appropriate to the work presented, with adequate lighting and sound quality that ensures the content is clearly understood.

Accompanying text

Each audio or video essay must be accompanied by a document containing a summary of the work of up to 150 words (providing context for its objectives, methodological approaches, main sources, and results or reflections), keywords, and references used. The summary and keywords must be provided in the essay’s original language and in English.

Submission deadline

Submissions are open until December 15, 2026 (accepted on a rolling basis throughout this period).

Eligibility

This is an open call for researchers, artists, and graduate students affiliated with any of the artistic fields represented by the associations comprising ARJ (performing arts, music, visual arts, and dance); it is not limited to music or any other specific artistic discipline.

In accordance with the journal's general guidelines, submissions must be authored or co-authored by at least one researcher holding a PhD, and all authors must provide a Lattes CV (or an equivalent official CV for international researchers).

Evaluation process

Submissions will undergo a blind review by experts in Artistic Research, adhering to the same principles of impartiality, transparency, and originality adopted by the ARJ journal for other submission categories. Submission Instructions

Submissions must be made via the ARJ journal’s OJS platform (https://periodicos.ufrn.br/artresearchjournal), exclusively for the section “Dossier: Artistic Research and Creative Processes: writing practices and new forms of dissemination.”

Please attach:
● the video file (MP3, WAV, MP4, AVI, or another standard audio or video format) as the main or supplementary document, following the system's guidelines;
● the accompanying text in Word format (.doc/.docx);
● the Lattes CV (or equivalent) of all authors.

Additionally, it is recommended to upload the video to a streaming platform (Vimeo or YouTube, preferably in private or unlisted mode) and submit the corresponding link to facilitate the review process.

Licensing

Accepted works will be published under the Creative Commons Attribution-NonCommercial-ShareAlike (CC BY-NC-SA) license, in accordance with the ARJ journal’s editorial policy.

  • CHAMADA ABERTA PARA ARTIGOS ORIGINAIS

    Chamada de artigos: dossiê temático e artigos livres

    A revista ARJ - Art Research Journal / Revista de Pesquisa em Artes segue sua temática em dossiê permanente com ensaios sobre perspectivas multidisciplinares no campo da Arte, além de artigos livres (independentes do dossiê).

    Artigos originais – oriundos de pesquisas nas áreas de artes cênicas, artes visuais, dança, música, história da arte, interdisciplinares ou transdisciplinares – podem ser submetidos a qualquer momento pelo sistema de fluxo contínuo e publicação imediata após aprovação em parecer duplo-cego. O autor principal ou pelo menos um dos autores deverá possuir título de doutor. Os artigos em português devem seguir as normas técnicas da ABNT quanto a resumos, citações, referências etc.

    Os artigos devem possuir entre 30.000 e 80.000 caracteres com espaços no corpo do texto principal (exceto título, título em inglês, resumo, palavras-chave, abstract, keywords e referências). Situações especiais podem ser discutidas previamente com os editores.

    Dossiê temático permanente de ARJ: 
    Perspectivas multidisciplinares no campo da Arte

    Ensaiadas nas vanguardas do início do século XX e ativas e sistematicamente instauradas a partir dos anos 1960, as ações e reflexões construídas sobre plataformas multidisciplinares figuram entre as mais interessantes contribuições estéticas e intelectuais da arte e das diferentes manifestações artísticas. Com muitas formas estratégicas de dar-se a perceber e comunicar, a criatividade segue fazendo a concepção teórica de si mesma, apoiada em substantivos e adjetivos tão determinantes quanto libertários: interdisciplinar, transdisciplinar, multidisciplinar, intermídia, obra de arte total, intersemiótica, atravessamentos, hibridismos. Propondo-se a discutir se, em que grau e desde quando existem interlocuções interdisciplinares no campo da arte (e dela com outros campos, como as ciências), assim como apresentar (ou problematizar) suas perspectivas multidisciplinares, o dossiê principal da revista ARJ reúne ensaios oriundos de pesquisas envolvidas com manifestações intra e interartísticas.

  • Open call for dossier: THEORIES, POETICS AND PRACTICES OF EARLY MUSIC

    The Working Group: Theories, Poetics and Practices of Early Music, in partnership with the Art Research Journal – ARJ, invites researchers and research groups to submit proposals for scientific articles, reviews and interviews related to the theme Theories, Poetics and Practices of Early Music to integrate the next dossier of the ARJ.

    Considering the fact that the notion of Early Music can be quite broad, for this dossier, we delimit its meaning in the following terms: we deal with music produced, practiced and thought of in the context of the Ancien Régime, that is, those music typical of European monarchies from the 16th, 17th and 18th centuries, both Catholic or Protestant, present in the seats of political and religious powers and in their various ramifications, including more or less peripheral states and colonies. We emphasize studies devoted to the recovery of references, concepts, ideas, processes, techniques, artifices and artifacts from past times, places, and cultures, which come to us in ruins, in the form of scores, manuals, treatises, instruments, letters, paintings and all kinds of records, documents and historical vestiges. Considered from a hermeneutic perspective, these diverse materials, in connection, allow us to glimpse this past and understand it in our present time, from the fusion of their own horizon of meaning and ours, as readers, listeners and practitioners of this music today.

    All articles, reviews or interviews submitted to the dossier must attend the conditions defined by ARJ, as well as its formatting criteria. All guidelines are available on the Journal's website. 

    IMPORTANT: All submissions for this dossier must be gathered by the organizers and sent to the editor of the Journal. Therefore, these submissions should be addressed to the e-mail dossiearj.musicaantiga@gmail.com and not to the electronic system of the Journal. This procedure will be adopted to distinguish works directed to the dossier from other works submitted in a continuous flow regime to the Journal. Submissions for the dossier will be received until 06/17/2022. Further information can be obtained on the Journal's website or through the e-mail dossiearj.musicaantiga@gmail.com.

  • Atualização da ABNT

    A revista ARJ informa atualização em norma técnica da ABNT. A NBR 6028, que trata de resumos, foi atualizada em 18/5/2021. Entre as mudanças está a separação das palavras-chave, que desde 2003 era por pontos. A partir de maio de 2021, a separação entre palavras-chave passa a ser por ponto e vírgula. Essa será a formatação que passará a ser usada nos artigos publicados "ahead of print" e, após, nos artigos diagramados. A interface da revista na plataforma OJS permanecerá inalterada, com separação por vírgulas, por ser formatada por critérios externos.   Veja a norma: "4.1.7 As palavras-chave devem figurar logo abaixo do resumo, antecedidas da expressão Palavras-chave, seguida de dois-pontos, separadas entre si por ponto e vírgula e finalizadas por ponto.     7thº Forum of Journal Editors in the field of Arts / Visual Arts

    MANIFESTATION FORUM OF EDITORS

    The editors of Brazilian scientific journals linked to the Graduate Programs in Visual Arts and research and graduate associations in arts, gathered at the 7th Forum of Editors of the Area of Arts / Visual Arts, which took place remotely, on September 28 and 29, 2020, with the presence of 26 journals and 37 participants, among editors, deputy editors and representatives, make it known that among several discussed points that will enter into specific document, highlight the following manifestations:

    The valorization of the Arts area in CAPES and its role of defending the specificities of visual arts journals in view of the set of areas that integrate the Brazilian graduate program, recognizing the achievements resulting from the active presence of our peers for the consolidation of journals in the dissemination of knowledge and its impacts on the social and cultural policies of the country;

    The importance of defending evaluative criteria for the visual arts area, in addition to citation impact metrics that have been imposed as a bibliometric indicator in the evaluation of performance of academic scientific production and journals;

    The valorization by the area and the Graduate Programs of the work and the fundamental role of reviewers to ensure the quality of the works published by the journals of Visual Arts.

     We strongly reject the Brazilian Government's interference spree on university autonomy, budget cuts and the failure of funding that make research in public universities and their fundamental objectives unfeasible, as well as the social function of Brazilian public education.
