Abstract

The article discusses the educational potential of Hip-Hop and Funk as cultural movements that have contributed to the political and cultural formation of youth in the favelas and urban peripheries of Brazil during the transition from the 20th to the 21st century. Based on the resignification of the terms “periphery” and “favela” by these cultural movements, a brief historical overview of Hip-Hop and Funk is presented, along with a critical reflection on how these movements have been represented by mainstream Brazilian media and, consequently, their place in art/education and other educational spheres. In this context, through bibliographic research and the analysis of laws that support the inclusion of favela and peripheral cultures in education, the article establishes dialogues with art/education focused on visual arts and presents experiences that, in partnership with the knowledge embedded in Hip-Hop and Funk cultures, contribute to pedagogical and art-educational practices aimed at building a more afro- referenced educational landscape.
