Abstract

The Hyacinthia (Hiakínthia) take place at the beginning of summer, the first of the major festivities of the Spartan calendar. The festival made a remembrance of the late Spartan prince Hyacinthus (Hiakínthos), who died while playing discus with Apollo. The festivities in honor of the deity were held in the city and take ten days. The peak of the festivities was a large procession that links a thread from Sparta to Amyclas, bounding these two communities by a sacred way, hiera odos. This paper seeks to analyze the Spartan festivities as a mechanism for constructing and strengthening a local religious identity, which aimed to strengthen relations between the Spartans and the other communities that circulated under their political orbit. To this end, use will be made of literary documentation and, where possible, of data of material origin, in order to build a solid profile of the festivities, their stages and rituals.
