Challenges and Prospects for Sustainable Water Resource Management in Currais Novos, Brazil

The semi-arid region of Rio Grande do Norte is an area characterized by low rainfall and low soil fertility. The objective of this study was to investigate the management of water resources in Currais Novos/RN, located in the Seridó region of the state of Rio Grande do Norte. Therefore, methodologically, a qualitative analysis of official documents, technical reports, and academic articles was carried out to understand water management practices and sustainable alternatives for the proper use of this resource in the region. The results showed that the city faces challenges due to the climate, requiring dams and wells for water supply. The main reservoirs include the Dourado dam, located in Currais Novos/RN, and the Gargalheiras dam, located in the municipality of Acari/RN. In addition, alternatives such as well drilling, construction of underground dams, and installation of cisterns have been effective for local water management. It is concluded that the municipality of Currais Novos adopts efficient strategies, such as cisterns, to overcome climatic adversities and ensure water security.
