This article offers a modest honor to one of Brazil’s prominent scholars in the fields of text and discourse, Professora Dr. Mônica Magalhães Cavalcante, who passed away in April 2024. In the first part, through a form of personal historiography, we highlight Mônica Magalhães Cavalcante’s crucial role in the reception and dissemination of Marie-Anne Paveau’s ideas about digital discourse. Next, we propose a reflection on ChatGPT, attempting to follow her distinctively inquisitive style. ChatGPT is, without a doubt, a linguistic phenomenon and, as such, can be a legitimate object of interest for linguistic studies. Our discussion is situated within the field of Digital Discourse Analysis, from the perspective of Paveau (2021). Within this framework, we aim to reflect on the digital nature of ChatGPT. Considering three types of phenomena that can be conceptualized as digital, and the fact that ChatGPT is digitally produced, we ask which conceptualization can adequately encompass it. To pursue this discussion, we compare the characteristics of each type of digital phenomenon with the functional characteristics of ChatGPT. This reflection is justified by the understanding that, if we intend to approach ChatGPT as a linguistic/discursive fact produced in a digital environment, it is necessary to define it as an object of study and coherently situate it within a theoretical framework.
