BEES AT SCHOOL:

UNIVERSITY EXTENSION FOR EDUCATUION AND ENVIRONMENTAL CONSERVATION

Abstract

Brazil harbors a remarkable diversity of native bees that remain largely unknown to the general population. This article reports the results of two university outreach projects aimed at raising awareness of the importance of bees. Over a three-year period, workshops, educational trails, field days, lectures, and short courses were carried out, integrating in-person activities with digital resources. These initiatives involved students from six public schools, as well as teachers and families. The findings revealed a significant increase in knowledge about bee diversity, a greater understanding of the role of pollination, and a more critical perception of environmental threats. They also demonstrated the potential of university outreach to integrate teaching, research, and social action, emphasizing that bees are present throughout the territory and are essential for environmental conservation and food security.
