Abstract

The presence of companion animals is very common in homes around the world. Pets have gained importance due to the benefits that their interaction with humans can bring. However, owning a pet can also be a risk for the transmission of zoonoses, if there is no knowledge to prevent them. In order to reduce the incidence of leishmaniasis (kala-azar) in the municipality of Santa Cruz-RN, educational actions were carried out in six public schools, promoting autonomy in caring for one's own health. For the intervention, FACISA/UFRN students prepared a competition with different challenges. A total of 210 students were included in the extension project, contributing to the municipality's public health and making students multipliers of knowledge.
