EDITORIALAbstract
This issue of Revista Cronos (July–Dec. 2026, Volume 27) centers on the dossier "Energy Transition, Territories, and Socio-environmental Justice." It was organized by researchers Moema Hofstaetter—a member of the Interdisciplinary Laboratory of Societies, Environments, and Territories (LISAT/UFRN)—and Maria Dulce Picanço Bentes—a professor in the Department of Architecture at the Federal University of Rio Grande do Norte (UFRN). Both conduct research in territories impacted by wind energy complexes in Rio Grande do Norte.
The energy transition stands as one of the major challenges of the 21st century. The topic reveals profound conflicts regarding territory, access to natural resources, the distribution of development costs and benefits, and differing conceptions of socio-environmental justice.
It is precisely within this context that the present dossier—comprising ten articles and an interview—is situated. The texts share a commitment to critically understanding the multiple meanings of the energy transition, rejecting interpretations that reduce it solely to technological advancements or the expansion of renewable energy. Instead, they demonstrate that while decarbonizing the economy is essential, it can only be considered socially acceptable if it incorporates principles of territorial justice, democratic participation, and respect for the rights of populations directly affected by energy projects.
