TRANSITIONAL SPACES IN THE CONTEMPORARY BRAZILIAN SERTÃO: AN ANALYSIS OF THE SHORT STORY MENTIRAS DE AMOR AND THE MOVIE VIAJO PORQUE PRECISO, VOLTO PORQUE TE AMO (2009)

Abstract

This paper analyses the Backlands image in Brazilian contemporary cinema and literature. Backlands here is understood as a discourse built throughout time and attributed to determined spaces with particular geographical features. The paper will focus in Ronaldo Correia de Brito’s tale “Mentiras de amor”, part of the book Faca e Livro dos Homens (2017), and in Marcelo Gomes e Karim Aïnouz’ movie Viajo porque preciso, Volto porque te amo (2009). The paper is based on the perception that there is an evolution of this image’s usage in our arts, mainly because, currently, the Backland’s image is represented through an internal optics. The paper uses the theory of authors such as Ortiz (1998), Albuquerque (2011), among others.
