Introduction: The nursing team is directly responsible for the care of neonatal patients, who are subjected daily to various painful procedures. It is essential for the team to understand the factors contributing to the development of painful situations and to recognize the signs exhibited by neonates. Objective: To analyze the knowledge of the nursing team in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit regarding the recognition of pain in newborns. Methodology: This study is an integrative literature review conducted between November 2023 and August 2024. A search was carried out in the MEDLINE, LILACS, Web of Science, and Scopus databases using the descriptors: "neonate," "pain," "neonatal intensive care units," and "nursing," with the assistance of the Boolean operators AND and OR. Results: The findings indicate that the most commonly observed sign of pain in newborns is crying, and the nursing team often addresses pain management subjectively. Newborns also express pain through facial expressions and limb flexion. Conclusion: The nursing team plays a crucial role in identifying these signs, as they are directly responsible for the care of newborns in the neonatal ICU setting.
