Abstract

Introduction: Internal tooth bleaching can have external cervical resorption as an adverse effect. Thus, it is recommended that a cervical barrier be made using a suitable material to prevent the diffusion of hydrogen peroxide into the periodontal ligament. Various materials have been proposed for this purpose, including resin-modified glass ionomer cement. Aim: The aim of this study was to review the literature on the effectiveness of using resin-modified glass ionomer cement as a cervical barrier during bleaching of devitalized teeth. Methodology: A bibliographic search was held in the main databases: PubMed and Web of Science, Scopus, and the Virtual Health Library databanks, from 2014 to 2024, using the descriptors “Tooth Bleaching”, “Intracoronal Bleaching”, “Internal Bleaching” and “Glass Ionomer Cements”. A total of six articles were obtained, which dealt with the literature sought. The articles included in the review were categorized into favorable and unfavorable in order to perform a qualitative analysis. Results: It was found that 71.4% of the analyzed studies showed favorable conditions for the use of resin-modified glass ionomer cement, and only 28.6% showed unfavorable results. Mineral Trioxide Aggregate and Biodentine showed superior results compared to resin-modified glass ionomer cement in two articles. Conclusions: Resin-modified glass ionomer cement can be indicated for use as a cervical barrier when internal bleaching is performed with sodium perborate, alone or in combination with low-concentration hydrogen peroxide.
