Abstract

Introduction: Amelogenesis imperfecta is part of a group of conditions that clinically and structurally compromise tooth enamel. The type of defect associated with other factors such as the presence of sensitivity, malocclusions and esthetic alterations will influence the treatment chosen. Objective: The aim of this case report was to describe the interdisciplinary treatment approach proposed to a patient diagnosed with amelogenesis imperfecta.  Case description: Patient MHP came to the Dentistry Department with an esthetic and functional complaint about her smile. Clinically, she had opaque and yellow-brown enamel on all her teeth and loss of this tissue in specific areas of occlusion, whose diagnosis was compatible with amelogenesis imperfecta in the hypocalcified pattern, subtype IIIA, of autosomal dominant inheritance. She also revealed tooth absences, skeletal anterior open bite, caries and biofilm accumulation, besides reporting tooth sensitivity in some areas. The treatment plan included basic periodontal therapy, endodontic treatment, composite resin restorations and orthodontic treatment with a view to undergoing subsequent orthognathic surgery. The proposed rehabilitation aimed to bring the patient back to a healthy state, provide an esthetically pleasing smile, promote hygiene and prepare the dental elements to receive the orthodontic brackets. Conclusions: An interdisciplinary approach, sometimes multidisciplinary, may be necessary for the resolution and successful treatment of some cases of amelogenesis imperfecta.
