Figured bass and the rule of the octave in Traité d’accompagnement et de composition, selon la règle des octaves de musique, by François Campion

This article explores the development of basso continuo up to the characterization of the Rule of the Octave, and its influence on the establishment of Harmony associated with the major and minor modes throughout the seventeenth, eighteenth, and nineteenth centuries. It discusses ostinato bass lines for dances such as the passamezzo (antico and moderno), the ruggiero, the bergamasca, the folia, and especially the romanesca. It also demonstrates the role of figured bass as a guide in musical composition through its use by Niedt in a treatise published in 1706, in which harmonic progressions are defined on the basis of bass figures. Finally, it examines the Rule of the Octave according to François Campion’s 1716 treatise, in which each note of the bass line, whether ascending or descending, and in major or minor scales, supports a specific harmony, generating a powerful means of tonal coherence fundamental to eighteenth-century tonalism.
